Spotify accused Apple of running a monopoly. Now the EU is waiting for answers from Apple.

The EU investigation into Apple seems to be well underway after Spotify accused them of running a monopoly. Now the EU Commission confirms that they have initiated the study as a result of Spotify's accusations and that they are waiting for Apple to respond to the charges.

"We are looking into the matter now, and we have asked several questions for those involved in that market, and of course Apple itself, who has to answer the accusations that have been raised, told the EU Margrethe Vestager to Reuters.

Complained Apple
The investigation is a result of Spotify boss Daniel Ek sending an open letter to the European Commission to complain about Apple. In the letter, he wrote that Apple is leveraging its market position to prevent Spotify and other music streaming services from competing with Apple Music.

I specifically complained that Apple is taking 30 percent of the revenue Spotify earns through the App Store, which means they have to praise their subscriptions for 30 percent higher through Apple, to be left with the same income. At the same time, Apple's terms prohibit Spotify from telling iOS users that they can buy the subscription cheaper if they order from the web and not via the App Store.

Apple: - Spotify will have all the benefits without contributing
After I submitted the letter, Apple stated:

- After several years of using the App Store to make the company grow dramatically, Spotify wants to keep all the benefits of the App Store ecosystem without contributing. It includes the significant revenue that they have received from the App Store customers, Apple wrote in March, while also attacking Spotify's payout to music artists:

- At the same time, they distribute the music you love while making ever smaller contributions to artists, musicians, and songwriters who make the music. They have even gone so far as to bring the creators to court.

I said after Apple's comment that Apple's response was as expected:

- Any company with a monopoly would say that they have done nothing wrong. Apple's answer is exactly as planned, said Ek.
